This document reports on a “Walkability Workshop” held at the East Scarborough Storefront in the Kingston‐Galloway‐Orton Park neighbourhood of Toronto in September, 2008. The workshop is part of a larger study called Toronto’s Apartment Neighbourhood from approximately 10 Toronto neighbourhoods. The goal of the study is to explore the ways residents living in high‐rise areas get around their neighbourhoods and, especially, to highlight the importance of walking for residents in the carrying out of their daily lives. It is intended to identify what works for pedestrians, and barriers to walking.
Pepsi has decided to give away a heap of cash, and Storefront has been selected as one of only 300 projects from across the country to participate in the contest!

Storefront’s Community Design Initiative is a building project engaging youth to design an 8,000 square foot building in one of Canada’s most marginalized neighborhoods. The students, ranging from the ages of 9-21, have just finished 6 months of design education and now as we have a design, we’re embarking on a $4 million capital campaign to see this project realized. The Pepsi refresh money will be used to build the new commercial-grade kitchen which will enable more cooking and nutrition programs to run as well as construct and upgrade the computer resource area – both areas that community groups and individuals use on a daily basis.

You can help us by giving us your vote. Sign up once and after that, all you need to do is click on our project.

You can vote every day until August 31st. We need ALL OF YOU to pledge to visit: http://www.refresheverything.ca/communitydesigninitiative every day for the next two months and just do a quick click. Make it your homepage. Pass it along. Put it on Facebook. Tweet about it. We need all the votes we can get!
